What is the difference between counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling is a type of talking therapy in its own right that allows a person to talk about their problems and feelings in a confidential and empathic environment.

Psychotherapy is a type of therapy used to treat emotional problems and mental health conditions.  A psychotherapist is a trained mental health professional whose key objective is to listen deeply at your issues, as a counsellor would do, and help you gain a better understanding of the patterns of these issues as well as treating you with new/different methods to help you to cope, or teach specific skills to help you tolerate painful emotions, manage relationships more effectively or improve behaviour. You would also be encouraged to develop your own solutions.

There are many kinds of psychotherapy approaches, you can read about the therapy approaches I use, by clicking here.

What is Coaching and Mentoring?

Simply put, coaching is for those clients that have already dealt with their past issues with their therapist and now looking forward with a goal in mind for their future.  As your coach, I will use my knowledge and understanding of your processes, as well as use a variety of styles, skills and techniques that are appropriate to your context, to enable learning and development to occur and thus performance to improve. I don't necessarily have to have direct experience in your context or the type of work you do.

Mentoring is usually done by someone that has 'been there and done it' and can support someone else to go through the same/similar learning.  In its traditional sense, it enables an individual to follow in the path of an older and wiser mentor who can pass on knowledge, experience and open doors to otherwise out-of-reach opportunities.

If you have opted for the coaching or mentoring option and we find that a past issue surfaces, I can support you with that as your psychotherapist too.

What is NLP?

NLP was initially created in the 1970s by mathematician Richard Bandler and linguistics professor John Grinder, who began modelling the behaviours and practices of a few top communicators and therapists. They studied their behaviour to learn how to be as good as the top people in their fields.

The field of NLP studies the connections between our brains, behaviour and language. For example, how we process the information coming in through our senses from the world around us, how our brains store and retrieve information, and how we communicate with each other. As this knowledge has developed, so methods of changing the ways we deal with this information have also been developed.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a tool I use to help you change the negative neural connections and pathways that have been created in your minds and can be useful for dealing with fears and phobias, as well as to develop our communication skills and explore our values and belief systems.

Do you have concessions?

I am able to give a limited number of concessions sessions - please see my Fees page for more detail. You may call to discuss availability.

Is there a guarantee?

With therapy, you are paying for a service, not for guaranteed results. No guarantees or claims of cure are ever offered. No refund is payable for the sessions you have attended whatever the circumstances. If you pay in advance for the treatment, then unused sessions will be refunded as soon as you inform me that you don’t need to continueThe human mind and body are complex and everyone is different, so it is hard to say with 100% certainty what the results will be. It is a gradual process where we will work together to help you to overcome challenges and make changes. Therefore the results will also depend on your commitment, motivation and involvement in your change process. I commit to bringing my skills and expertise as a therapist to help you in the best way I can and the most successful clients are the ones who commit fully to their change process too.

What happens if I am late?

I do ask that you come on time for your session, but if there are circumstances outside of your control and you come late, we will just continue until what is left of the allotted time is up. In some cases extra time is just added on to the end if it is just a matter of a few minutes or so.

Why are there no testimonials on the site?

Certain psychotherapy bodies do not allow testimonials from clients, as it can be seen as a conflict of interest and confidentiality may be put at risk.  However, the feedback from my clients so far has been positive.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail them to me and I will come back to you.  Thank You.
